The International Chair of Bioethics Jérôme Lejeune

Our inspiration

« Before God and men, we, the Servants of Life, testify that every member of our species is a person. The devotion owed to each one does not depend on his age, nor on the illness that might overwhelm him; from his conception to his last moments, it is the same human being who develops, matures and dies. The rights of the person are inalienable from the beginning. The fertilized egg, the embryo, the fetus cannot be donated nor sold. His or her continuous development in the mother’s body cannot be denied. No one may subject him or her to any form of exploitation. No one may take his or her life, neither his or her father, nor mother, nor any authority. Therefore, vivisection, abortion, euthanasia, cannot be the act of a Servant of Life.
We, likewise, declare that the sources of life must be preserved. As the heritage of all, the human genome is unavailable. He or she cannot be the object of ideological or commercial speculation. His or her particularities cannot be patented.
Concerned to perpetuate the Hippocratic tradition and to conform our practice to the moral precepts of the Roman Magisterium, we reject any deliberate degradation of the genome, any exploitation of gametes and any induced disturbance of reproductive functions. We reaffirm that the relief of suffering and the cure of disease, the preservation of health and the repair of the genetic heritage errors, are the goal of our efforts, the respect for the person being safeguarded ».

Statement of the “Servants of Life” written by Jérôme Lejeune

in 1994 for the Pontifical Academy for Life.

Mission

A service in favor of the life of every human being.

The ICBJL continues the work to which Professor Jérôme Lejeune devoted his life: the protection of the human being from science and reason

Its inspiration comes from the “Servants of Life” statement drawn up by Prof. Lejeune for the Pontifical Academy for Life.

His activity is developed based on a personalistic vision with ontological foundation, which considers the human being as a personal being, in a scientific and ethical manner, and in the continuous pursuit of truth and the common good.

History of the Chair

Directed by Dr. Mónica López Barahona, the International Chair of Bioethics Jérôme Lejeune continues the work started by Professor Lejeune, supporting its activity on three pillars: training, research and publishing.

Created in 2009, within the Centro de Estudios Biosanitarios, it joined the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation in 2015.
