«I see that there is only one way left to save them, that is, by healing them.

The task is immense, but so is the Hope»

Prof. Jérôme Lejeune

Our Research

The International Chair of Bioethics Jérôme Lejeune develops research in Bioethics with the fundamental purpose of defending the human dignity of every person from conception to natural death. It provides thoughts and arguments from an interdisciplinary perspective (scientific, ethical and legal) together with a realistic philosophy from an ontologically based personalism. We want to offer society elements to form consciences and to be able to adequately address the challenges presented by the scientific-technological developments, all this with a special and attentive eye towards the care of people with intellectual disabilities.

The areas of development of research in Bioethics are:

  • Fundamentals of Bioethics: person, dignity, human nature (Handbook of Fundamentals of Bioethics, Anthropology and Fundamental Ethics).
  • Research on Bioethics and the Beginning of Human Life: status of the human embryo, IVF, cloning, CRISPR, surrogacy (Handbook of Bioethics and the Beginning of Human Life).
  • Research on Biolaw: National and European legislation on current challenges in Bioethics (Handbook of Biolaw).
  • Research on Bioethics and End of Human Life: euthanasia, palliative care, brain death (Handbook on Bioethics and End of Human Life).
  • Research on emerging bioethical issues: ectogenesis, neuroethics, hybrids and interspecies chimeras, etc. (Handbook in progress) .
  • Studies on bioethical issues and preparation of ad hoc reports.
    1. Report on surrogacy.
    2. Report on non-invasive prenatal diagnosis.
    3. Report on euthanasia.
    4. Articles on clinical cases that have occurred in our surroundings (e.g. Alfie Evans).
    5. Articles and comments on national and international regulations: critical note on euthanasia law in Spain, critical note on the approval of the right to abortion as a human right in France.
  • Jacques Suaudeau Prize for research in Bioethics.
  • Research projects:
    • COMDIDOWN Project: research project on the communication of Down Syndrome diagnosis.
