Our history
The Foundation began its work in France in 1995 after the death of Prof. Jérôme Lejeune, considered the father of modern genetics for discovering, in 1958, the genetic cause of Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). It devotes between 4 and 5 million euros per year to research. It has a biobank in Paris, with more than 20,000 samples, and 4 medical centers: Paris, where more than 13,000 patients have passed through, Nantes (France), Cordoba (Argentina) and Madrid (Spain).
In 2009, the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation created the International Chair of Bioethics Jérôme Lejeune with Dr. Mónica López Barahona as the President, where they develop training, scientific publications and initiatives in the field of Bioethics.
In 2015, the Foundation created a permanent delegation in Spain. In February 2023, it opened the doors of the first Jérôme Lejeune Medical Institute in Spain, thanks to the collaboration of Álvaro Entrecanales Foundation, among other organizations.
